CIOFF and Partners Hold RTD on Cyber Security

As part of its continuing ICT advocacy program, the CIOF Foundation, Inc., held last March 4, 2010 a Round Table Discussion on Cyber Security.  The RTD was held in partnership with the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) National Cyber Security Office (NCSO), and the Chief Information Officers Forum (CIOF).

IBM Philippines was sponsor and host of the event which was held at the IBM Innovation Center, UP-Ayala Technopark, in Diliman, Quezon City.  Undersecretary  Virtus V. Gil  of the CICT-NCSO was keynote speaker while CIOFF Chairman Daniel F. Pabellon and Mr. Ike Torres, manager for public sector at IBM Philippines, welcomed some 45 participants from various government agencies during the event.  They spoke of the growing threat perpetrated not only from within agencies, but especially from organized groups requiring greater vigilance and joint actions among agencies and with the private sector.
Other speakers and presenters during the event were Mr. Christopher Santos, IT Specialist for Security, IBM Philippines, who spoke on the current state of security in the country, and Ms. Malou V. Santelices, NCSO Project Manager, who presented key initiatives and advances already made on cyber security by the national government, through NCSO.

Network administrators of four government agencies whose web sites were recently hacked shared with the other participants the steps they have taken to ensure that hacking of their web sites will not happen again.

CIOFF Trustee Jo A. Vidal, together with CIOFF Trustee George Kintanar, who coordinated the holding of the event agreed with the rest of the participants on the urgent need for legislation, which continues to be pending in Congress, and stronger government and private sector cooperation to shield the country and its information infrastructures from cyber-threats and -infiltration.
